How To?: Customize and Streamline Your Windows Desktop

Deskspace 2

Deskspace 2

Any car enthusiast worth his salt knows that until you customize your ride, it’s just another commuter. Likewise, your computer is little more than a generic PC in an ocean of look-alikes until you make it your own.

Here, I don’t settle for out of the box. To us, a computer is incomplete until it’s been forged in our own image. To that end, we’re taking a look at six unbeatable tools that can spice up a drab Windows desktop. When we’re done here, you’ll have given your default Windows interface a much-needed face-lift by adding custom themes, ditching the taskbar for a more attractive dock, and setting up your wallpaper to refresh on a schedule.

This newfound pride in your desktop will raise your morale while you’re working for the man, and these apps will boost your overall productivity by better organizing your applications and icons on different virtual desktops and placing to-dos, system statistics, and other important information a keystroke away.

Sound appealing? That’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s time to turn that dreary Windows default into something you can be proud of.

Windows 7 Public Beta Released

I don’t believe that Microsoft is going to public beta released, this how it happen…

Windows 7 Icon

Here’s some breaking news: At the Microsoft CES Keynote, Steve Ballmer has just announced the launch of the Windows 7 Public beta. Customers of Technet and MSDN can get the beta right away (if you hadn’t already been tempted by the various leaks) while the rest of us will have to wait until 2 days from now to snag the trial OS.

In his keynote address, Ballmer stressed that Windows 7 will provide faster performance, longer battery life, faster boot times, and a less obnoxious security alert system. Early reports from people who have tried the beta seem to back these claims up, and we’re very excited to see how the public will react to this beta.

More as it happens.

While the site that points to the beta download wasn’t working at all earlier in the day, as CNET’s Ina Fried noted, it’s now back up but still doesn’t have the download links. But if you really, absolutely need to get Windows 7 Beta, follow the direct download links below (compliments of Wired):

Windows 7 x86 (32bit)

Windows 7 x64 (64 bit)

Microsoft still expects the actual site to be pointing to the downloads later today after it adds more infrastructure support.

USB 3.0 Only Running at a Quarter of Maximum Speed

We’re still more than excited about USB 3.0, but those of us expecting it to reach promised transfer speeds of 5000Mb/s this year are overly optimistic.

USB 3.0 Version

According to a TD Daily interview with a representative of the USB Implementers Forum, when USB 3.0 devices hit shelves in late 2009, we can anticipate transfer speeds of only 1200Mb/s. That’s roughly a quarter of USB 3.0′s potential, though still more than double USB 2.0 max speeds. So USB 3.0 will still be faster (and more power efficient) than current USB tech at launch, but it won’t be fully hulked out just yet. [TG Daily and image]
